What’s now set to happen with Manchester City icon Kevin De Bruyne as San Diego back away from deal

TBR Football can exclusively confirm what is now set to happen with Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne in wake of San Diego FC backing away from a deal.

On Friday, Manchester City confirmed that De Bruyne would be leaving the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old has won 16 trophies since joining City from German side Wolfsburg in 2015, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League.

It looked as though De Bruyne would be heading to San Diego, but it looks as though his plans will now have to change.

MLS looking to bring Kevin De Bruyne to another club

De Bruyne wants to move to Major League Soccer this summer, TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey can confirm.

However, previous suitors San Diego have pulled away from a deal – given the cost it would take to land the Belgian superstar.

TBR Football revealed last year that De Bruyne wants to move to America, ahead of a move to the Middle East – with clubs in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE all keen.

San Diego held talks with De Bruyne and held the discovery rights for him, which meant they had the right to talk.

However, we are told that the departure of Tom Vernon from the club’s board has seen some aspects of the club’s future project change.

That has included them deciding against another designated player like De Bruyne.

With Vernon gone, San Diego are focusing elsewhere and have allowed the discovery rights to De Bruyne to pass to another MLS side – and talks are ongoing.

As TBR Football previously revealed, MLS bosses are keen to bring in De Bruyne and are working to help facilitate the move in the coming months.

Who Manchester City have identified as a potential Kevin De Bruyne replacement

One name that has emerged as a player of real interest for City is Charles De Ketelaere, who plays for Atalanta.

De Ketelaere has been described as a ‘complete’ player by Club Brugge icon Gert Verheyen.

The £20million Atalanta man has also been compared to Liverpool and Brazil cult hero Roberto Firmino.

‘A naturally selfless player, De Ketelaere has taken to acting as a ‘false nine’ as if it were a position he has played all his life,’ Goal.com wrote of the 24-year-old.

‘He is tasked with acting as a facilitator for others as well as with scoring goals himself – much like Roberto Firmino (then) at Liverpool – and is thriving.’

West Ham United’s Lucas Paqueta is also on City’s radar, Bailey has confirmed.
