What Russell Martin said about Tottenham and Djed Spence before he was sacked by Southampton after 5-0 defeat
Russell Martin has been sacked by Southampton after Tottenham recorded a 5-0 win at St Mary’s on Sunday.
The Saints were actually 5-0 down at the interval, as Spurs made Premier League history in scoring five first half goals for tౠhe fܫirst time in their existence.
Southampton fans made themselves heard as they chanted for Russell Martin to leave, with banners reading “R.M. get out of ouജr club” being shown ꦕby TNT Sports cameras too.
As the 38-year-old held what was to be his last post-match interview as Southampton boss, he made a comment about Tottenham and Djed Spence.
Russell Martin says Southampton should have fouled Djed Spence but praises Tottenham
Spence, who James Maddison praised, was given a first Premier League start by Ange Postecoglou – o🌞ver two years on from his £20m arrival from Middlesbrough back in July 2022 – for the clash against Southampton.
The Tottenham No.24 wasted no ti♚me as he sought to impress the Australian, surging forward before sliding an impressively weighted pass into Maddison, who put Spurs 1-0 up within 40 seconds.
Speaking about that moment and Tottenham in general, Martin told : “We have a chance to foul Djed Spence in 🧜the middle of the pitch and we don’t, then we’re 1-0 down… I think we also have to accept the fact we played against a really top team – on their night – with real athleticism and power.”

Southampton perhaps should have delved into the dark arts to halt Spence’𒐪s driving run, but take nothing away from the 24-year-old’s desire to shrug off Flynn Downes and make an impact on a night꧟ where he really needed to impress.
Ange Postecoglou now has a defining task on his hands
The story of Tottenham’s season so far has been one focused on a lack of🦂 consistency.
Not since 𓃲September have Spurs won consecutive games in the Premier League, often tripping over just as it seems like th🔜ey may be getting somewhere under Postecoglou.

Three tricky fixtures await the north Londoners now in the form of a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Manchester United, as well as Premier League clashes against Li𓆉verpool, Nottingham Forest and Wolves.
If Tottenham can put together a run of results in these games, the second half of the 2024/25 campaign could prove fruitful for Postecoglou – who Daniel Levy is backing despite a patchy season so far.
