What Jose Mourinho ‘laughed’ about immediately after Arsenal appointed Mikel Arteta in 2019
After replacing Unai Emery in 2019, Mikel Arteta has now overseen 269 matches as Arsenal boss.
In his time at Arsenal, Arteta🌌 has one major honour to his name, an FA Cup win back in 2020.
🔴Arsenal have come close to pipping Manchester City to the Premier League title over the last two campaigns, but just as currently appears to be the case this season, they came up just short.
💝Of course, Arteta has still done a remarkable job of rebuilding Arsenal’s squad and expectations, something Emery was unable to immediately do after Arsene Wenger.
ꦓHowever, Pep Guardiola’s former assistant will ultimately be judged on how many trophies he now wins in an era in which Arsenal are properly competitive again, albeit thanks to him.
Jose Mourinho didn’t appear too impressed when Arsenal chose Mikel Arteta
That being said, Jose Mourinho🦩 seemed to aim a dig at Arsenal and Arteta after the Spaniard was appointed back in 2019.
🐓Just days after Arsenal announced that Arteta would replace interim boss Freddie Ljungberg, Mourinho went on a rant about top clubs appointing managers with the ‘fewest defeats’.

♏Mourinho seemed bemused that Carlo Ancelotti was managing Everton at the time and Arsenal had opted for Arteta, who had never been in charge of any club before.
൩Mourinho said: “The only point I can find, and it is for us to laugh a little bit, is that years ago the best managers were the guys with more victories and now the best is the guy with the fewest defeats.”
ꦬ“So, Ancelotti has three Champions Leagues, won the league in Italy, France and England and won cups here and there – but Ancelotti has lost, I don’t know, 200 matches?
𒊎“I have lost 150-180 – Carlo is a little bit older than me. I think now it is not about how much you won, it is about the matches we didn’t lose. So, probably the best managers now are the managers with zero defeats.
🔯“The only reason I can understand is that they look through the CVs and see guys with more defeats and guys with less defeats, so guys with less defeats are given the job. I cannot find another reason.”
Mikel Arteta still has time to prove Jose Mourinho wrong
💜Of course, it’s still a bit of an anomaly to this day that Ancelotti was managing Everton, one of the world’s best coaches, who is now winning everything with Real Madrid.
♕But in fairness to Mourinho, it was a brave decision for Arsenal to appoint Arteta at the time, a manager with very little coaching experience as he mentioned.
ꦿSome would find it easy to now suggest that Arsenal made a mistake given they haven’t won a trophy over the past few seasons.
🍒However, a manager like Ancelotti or Mourinho would have been very unlikely to stick around for such a long rebuild, a club that needed to go backwards before it could progress.
🍃Arteta is doing a fine job, a manager who deserves to be judged once he leaves Arsenal, whenever that will be.
