What Archie Gray’s dad and grandfather said about leaving Leeds United for Tottenham this summer

Archie Gray has now fully settled in to his new home in north London after switching Leeds United for Tottenham Hotspur.

The 18-year-old midfielder is currently in Tokyo, Japan with Tottenham as they begin their pre-season tour of Asia.

Gray has already made a bright impression on those at Spurs having made the leap up to a Premier League club following his time with Leeds.

Big things are being expected of the youngster in the future but Leeds did not come out of the deal for Gray too badly.

Along with a healthy chunk of change, the Whites also saw Joe Rodon make the return to Elland Road.

But now the dust has settled, Gray has shared what his dad told him when he had learned of the interest from Tottenham.

What Archie Gray’s dad said about leaving Leeds for Tottenham

Despite being just 18, Gray was able to rack up a staggering 52 appearances for the Leeds first team across all competitions.

All 52 of those came during the 2023/24 season where Gray rose to the first team thinking of Daniel Farke.

The youngster has already made a solid start at Spurs where he has filled in at centre-back due to the lack of options Ange Postecoglou currently has available.

Gray came through the ranks in Yorkshire, but it was apparent the move to Spurs was viewed as a no-brainer by those in the Gray household.

During Tottenham’s tour of Asia, the 18-year-old has sat down with journalist to discuss his move to the Lilywhites.

“At the start of the window I didn’t really know anything about [a potential transfer anywhere] and I was content to stay at Leeds, but as soon as I heard Tottenham were coming in I was like ‘I need to go there’, Gray said.

“It’s a huge club and my dad said that too. He came to my room one morning and said ‘look, you’ve got to go to Spurs. It’s a massive club’.”

What Archie Gray’s grandad said about joining Tottenham

And it is apparent it was not just Gray’s dad – who played 51 times in the Premier League with Leeds, Nottingham Forest and Sunderland – who was in support of the move to London.

Gray’s grandad, Frank, who also played for Leeds in the 1970s felt this was the right move for the youngster to make after impressing at Elland Road.

“My grandad was saying it as well, he’s obviously done pretty well in his career, and he said at some point you’ve got to go to one of the biggest clubs in England and he thinks now is the right time and he thinks Spurs is a massive club as well,” the 18-year-old added.

Now weeks on from the move, interestingly, Gray still hasn’t changed his Instagram photo from him in a Leeds kit.
