West Ham considering shock move for player who Niclas Fullkrug called ‘outstanding’

After completing a move for Niclas Fullkrug on Monday, West Ham United could now turn to a player who the striker already knows very well.

Julen Lopetegui started the summer with clear ambitions at West Ham, he wanted to revamp a squad which was low on numbers and quality in his eyes.

Working closely with Tim Steidten, Lopetegui wanted West Ham to sign up to eight players this summer.

And as we begin the final weeks of the transfer window, the Hammers have now welcomed five new signings, with Fullkrug the latest.

Crysencio Summerville also joined recently, two players who will immediately add fire-power to Lopetegui’s front line.

However, given that TBR Football recently shared West Ham’s willingness to sell both Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd this summer, perhaps the east Londoners could still find themselves slightly short at the back.

Max Kilman has come in, but all of Angelo Ogbonna, Thilo Kehrer and Ben Johnson have all left.

That being said, West Ham are now being linked with a surprise move for 35-year-old German star Mats Hummels.

West Ham could make a late attempt to sign Germany legend Mats Hummels

The news comes via reliable journalist who just shared his update on X.

Plettenberg explained that West Ham are considering the addition of one more experienced centre-back this season, and Hummels could be their man.

The journalist pointed out that Hummels may ultimately still decide to retire, but added that Italian side Bologna are no longer in the race.

Plettenberg shared: “West Ham are also monitoring the situation of Mats Hummels!

“West Ham considering to bring in one more experienced central defender this window. Hummels is on their list.

“A late attempt from West Ham is not excluded. Instead, Bologna have withdrawn their offer for Hummels as per Gianluca Di Marzio.

“But: It is also possible that Hummels will end his career. There are corresponding thoughts, but no final decision yet.”

Of course, one man that would likely be pleased to see Hummels arrive would be his former teammate Fullkrug.

Fullkrug that his Dortmund teammate was “playing an outstanding season” when discussing his chances of going to the Euros earlier this year.

And perhaps a one-year deal at West Ham could help Lopetegui’s side hit the ground running.
