Sami Hyypia says he’s buzzing after hearing ‘great news’ coming out of Liverpool
Things can change very quickly in football.
A few weeks ago, the mood around Liverpool was drab to say the least, they’d lost to Newcastle and PSG in the Carabao Cup and the Champions League and it was reported that Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to leave too.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah’s contract talks were going well, but nothing had been signed yet, and the same could be said for Virgil van Dijk.
Now, everything has flipped, Liverpool scored a late winner to beat West Ham last weekend, Mohamed Salah has signed his new deal, and Virgil van Dijk has followed suit, penning a new contract of his own.
Speaking on The Redmen TV, Sami Hyypia has been discussing Van Dijk’s new deal at Anfield, and he says that he’s ‘very happy’ to see the captain committing to Liverpool, claiming that this is ‘great news’.

Sami Hyypia reacts to Virgil van Dijk contract news
Hyypia spoke about Van Dijk signing this new deal.
The former Reds captain says that this is great news and it’s very important for the future of the club to keep Van Dijk at Anfield.
“Yeah, I’m very happy. It’s great news. Made my day,” Hyypia said.
And obviously, after Mo signed, it was a matter of time when he will sign as well. And I guess last game when he was kissing the batch, I think that was a great sign for everyone that he was going to sign.
“Yeah, yeah, it’s very important. It’s very important for the future. I think it shows as well for the players who are thinking of signing for us, that when he’s staying and Mo’s staying, that the club will mean business in the future as well.
So it’s very, very important. And he’s a very important part of the squad, that when he came, he was already a leader in his first few games. And he’s the type of player that he makes everyone around him to play better as well”
Liverpool’s continuing contract situations
Van Dijk and Salah’s futures have been a dark cloud hanging over Liverpool’s heads all season long, and, thankfully, those situations are now resolved.
However, Richard Hughes still has plenty of work to do on this front in the coming months as Liverpool do have some more contract situations to address.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to leave, but one final push on that front can’t be discounted.
Meanwhile, Ibrahima Konate has been in talks for a new deal for a while now, while Luis Diaz’s contract situation needs addressing too.

As backwards as it sounds, Liverpool also probably need to have a plan in place for Van Dijk and Salah. This time next year, we’ll be in a similar position again as both players head into the final year of their new contracts, and that will come around sooner than you think.
