Tottenham fans are claiming one of their own players is ‘overrated’ and has been ‘dreadful’ this season after 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest

Tottenham Hotspur lost their 18th game in the Premier League this season after suffering a 2-1 defeat against Nottingham Forest.

As Elliot Anderson and Chris Wood added to Spurs’ misery this campaign, Ange Postecoglou would have been increasingly worried about his job unless he wins the Europa League this season.

But Daniel Levy cost sack Postecoglou even if Tottenham manage to lift European silverware for the first time in 1984 when they won the UEFA Cup.

While Ange Postecoglou’s methods have been debated from the start of the season, several of the Lilywhites’ players are far from blameless in their demise as well — with one being Cristian Romero, who could have done a much better job of marking Chris Wood in the lead up to Forest’s second goal.

While Romero is ready to leave Spurs, Tottenham fans have made it clear that he has had a disastrous season, placing major doubts over his actual quality as he struggled against Nottingham Forest once again.

Tottenham fans call Cristian Romero “overrated” after defeat vs Nottingham Forest

One Tottenham fan criticised Cristian Romero’s latest display against Nottingham Forest by simply writing: “Another day, another dreadful Romero performance.”

Another Tottenham fan claimed that the clamour for much of the season for Romero and Micky van de Ven was futile as they are simply not good enough — slating the centre-back pairing’s respective performances against Nottingham Forest showed: “Spend all season going, ‘Oh, when VDV and Romero are bac, it will all be okay’ – they’re average at best.”

A third supporter claimed it is time for Spurs to cash in on Romero, whose asking price is £60 million: “Romero is a liability and lacks any form of defensive discipline. I’d sell him tomorrow if I could.”

A fourth Tottenham fan went as far to claim that Romero is “massively overrated” and “rash” after his showing against Nottingham Forest: “Romero is massively overrated. Terrible at marking players and makes rash tackles from behind. I’d be quite happy to see him leave this summer.”

A fifth fan also admitted that both the Argentine and Van de Ven might be overhyped, adding: “My goodness, we are going to need a miracle to win the Europa League, aren’t we? How can we be so vulnerable in the centre of defence with Romero and Van de Ven? Maybe they are a bit overrated.”

Finally, a sixth Tottenham fan claimed Romero is far from being a world-class defender as well: “Romero is not elite. I don’t care what anyone says.”

It’s safe to say that several Spurs supporters are disappointed with the former Atalanta centre-back, who looked like a top-quality player as well as a leader before this season.

Cristian Romero stats for Tottenham vs Nottingham Forest

The 26-year-old will not be in the best place as well, knowing that he is a much superior player than what his showings on the pitch indicate this season.

Romero was poor during Tottenham’s defeat to Wolves as well and it is high-time that he steps up his game.

Here are Romero’s stats against Nottingham Forest as Tottenham fans believe he has become one of their weakest links.

CRISTIAN ROMERO STATS VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST
POSSESSION LOST2
DUELS WON3/6
DRIBBLED PAST0
CLEARANCES2
BLOCKED SHOTS0

Based on the numbers alone, one would assume the Spurs colossus had a decent outing.

Losing possession just twice, winning half of his six duels and not being dribbled past even once are all statistics that go in Romero’s favour.

But considering how much of a fan favourite the two-time Copa America winner has been since his move to the Premier League, the fact that even Tottenham are prepared to sell Romero sums up his fall from grace.
