‘Too much quality’: Some Sunderland fans hail 18-year-old’s display, had opponent ‘on toast every time’
𒁃A number of Sunderland fans have been praising Black Cats youngster Dan Neil for his performance in the EFL Trophy last night.
ꦰThe 18-year-old midfielder, who has come through the ranks at the Stadium of Light, made Phil Parkinson’s starting XI for the trip to Fleetwood.
🀅Sunderland began brightly, with Callum McFadzean’s early strike giving the Black Cats the lead, and they finished the first half strongly, having hit the woodwork three times.

🅺However, a number of enforced substitutions – Oliver Younger, Cieran Dunne and McFadzean all had to leave the pitch due to injuries – changed the dynamic of the game.
♉Barrie McKay equalised for the hosts and Mark Duffy grabbed the winner just before the hour, the result meaning that Sunderland will be drawn away from home in the next round.
ཧDespite the defeat, several Black Cats youngsters impressed and gave the coaches food for thought in terms of potential first-team minutes in the league.
🔴Neil was one of those, impressing in a deeper role as he played some excellent passes, looking sharp as part of a midfield which dominated in the first half.
Though his influence waned a little after the break, his overall display was still hailed, with some Sunderland fans taking to social media with their thoughts:
Dan Neil has there full back on toast every time

ಞElliot Embleton and Dan Neil should be starting every game from now on. Quality players.

🌊Very impressive half from . Passing has been much slicker and we’ve used the width of the pitch really well. Neil very good to watch – has an excellent range of passing, very tidy player. Younger very impressive as well – won everything in the air and good on the ball 1/2

ಞAppreciate the quality of opposition is not great but Embleton, Neil and Diamond have been excellent and their movement, pace and ability to pass forward is a breath of fresh air

🐎Neil doesn’t fit the system because he has too much quality.

🌳It was a dead rubber game, shame we lost but not important at all. The performances of Neil, Embleton and Younger in the first half were huge positives though. The first two must be putting pressure on our first choice midfielders now

ᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚPositives to take from tonight. Neil, Embleton, Diamond, Younger all impressed.
꧙Hugely unlucky with injuries but like I say, I think we need a manager that can motivate his players because it’s clear to see Parkinson can’t.
Hopefully see them in the first team
