Three tackles, three headers: Liverpool star sends reminder to Klopp with Milan display

Liverpool produced a wonderful display with a largely-changed side to beat AC Milan and secure six wins from six in their group stage campaign. Ibrahima Konate’s stats suggest he was playing with a point to prove.

The Reds handed starts to the likes of Takumi Minamino, Nat Phillips, Neco Williams, Divock Origi and Tyler Morton on Tuesday night. It comes after Liverpool had already finished at the top of their group.

But despite the changes, Jurgen Klopp watched his side earn a brilliant 2-1 win at the San Siro. A familiar face opened the scoring, in the form of England international Fikayo Tomori – from a Milan corner.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s change of speed got the equaliser, his shot parried by Mike Maignan and Mo Salah finishing the rebound. Origi was the matchwinner again, a brilliant header from 10 yards.

Konate stats: Summer signing reminds Klopp what he can do for Liverpool

While it was a brilliant night for the likes of Salah, Origi, Morton and plenty more Liverpool players – Konate was afforded just his seventh senior outing for the Merseyside outfit, in Milan.

He was tasked with defending against Zlatan Ibrahimovic – and he did not give the Swedish ace a sniff. report that he produced more clearances than any of his teammates, and clocked up 40 out of 46 passes.

He won three headers, beaten only by Phillips with four. Three interceptions, and two tackles, too. It was a performance that suggested he had a point to prove – and will serve as a reminder to Klopp.

The £70,000-a-week () ace has been an unused substitute in 11 of Liverpool’s 15 Premier League games, with Joel Matip preferred alongside Virgil van Dijk. But Konate will have done his chances no harm in Italy.
