‘The things Arteta said’: Steve Bruce now reacts after what he heard Arsenal boss saying about him
Bruce left St. James’ Park in October last year, with Newcastle sitting 19th𝐆 in the Premier League and yet to win any of their first eight matches.
The West Brom꧒ manager was maligned by Newcastle fans during his tenure on Tyneside, but he was defended by fellow managers, Pep Guardiola and Arteta after he left.
✤The Arsenal manager said that he had a huge amount of respect for Bruce after he departed Tyneside.
ꦚAnd the veteran boss has now suggested that reading those comments meant a lot to him.
ℱ“The things Arteta said, that I was one of the most important managers of the last 20 years… The respect they (Arteta and Pep Guardiola) had for me, it was very flattering,” Bruce said.
🀅“I’d been ridiculed at Newcastle and there was no respect shown to me or my staff and they picked up on that. They didn’t like it, that’s one of the things everyone said to me [when I left].”
Bruce’s replacement Eddie Howe actually faced Arteta in his first game in charge of Newcastle, with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli inflicting a 2-0 defeat on Howe at The Emirates.
🔯Howe got the last laugh though, winning the reverse fixture by the same scoreline at St. James’ Park and effectively ending Arsenal’s top four hopes.

🧜Although Bruce didn’t enjoy the best time at his boyhood club, Arteta’s comments show how much respect there is between managers in the game.
𝓀 can’t be sniffed at, and Bruce’s peers understand better than anyone how difficult it is to stay in football management.
Bruce’s West Brom side kick off their Championship campaign this weekend with a visit to Chris Wilder’s Middlesbrough.
