Striker who scored 47 Premier League goals says he almost signed for Celtic

Celtic love nothing more than a quality striker leading their line.

From Henrik Larsson and Chris Sutton to Mousa Dembele and Odsonne Edouard, Celtic and their fans are always quick to fall in love with a player who can put the ball in the back of the net.

Celtic have signed many top strikers over the years, and now, a player who has scored 47 Premier League goals has admitted that he almost joined the Bhoys.

Indeed, speaking on Under the Cosh, Troy Deeney has admitted that he almost signed for Celtic before his move to Birmingham City.

Deeney says that he actually took a reduced wage at Birmingham compared to what Celtic were offering him, claiming that he was offered £40,000-a-week by the Scottish giants.

Troy Deeney almost joined Celtic

Deeney spoke about how he almost joined Celtic in 2021 after leaving Watford.

The striker says that he was very excited about the idea of joining Celtic, but he wasn’t willing to make a long-distance move at that age due to his family.

“No. Do you know what? If I’m being honest, I had two offers to go abroad, three offers to go abroad that were quite lucrative,” Deeney said.

“I had an offer to go to Middlesbrough with Neil Warnock, and then Celtic came in for me as well. And I was like, that’s mint, but it’s miles away.

“Again, now I’m getting to the point of 34, being around the kids. Oldest boy, he finishes this year, so he’s at that point where he needs me, becoming a man now. The girls need me. Like, no, I’m not moving.

“So, put it into perspective, those teams I’ve just mentioned offered me nearly £40K a week to go there. Ended up signing up Blues for 12 grand a week. But I was home.”

What Troy Deeney has said about Ange Postecoglou

If Deeney had joined Celtic at that point, he’d have been playing under Ange Postecoglou.

Now, Deeney isn’t your archetypal Postecoglou striker who presses hard and runs in behind, but this would’ve been an interesting clash of styles and characters.

There is reason to believe that Deeney would’ve got on with Postecoglou. After all, Deeney recently went out to bat for Postecoglou when discussing Tottenham’s current struggles.

“I actually feel sorry for the fella you know,” Deeney said about Postecoglou.

“You look at how Spurs play, they play some good stuff, they attack well and score loads of goals, but when it comes to defending, people blame the manager for defending, but how can you put on a session that stops people mis-kicking a ball?

“I think when you look at Ange, I would challenge people to look at the goals they concede, they’re not structural damage ones, they’re not struggling, it’s man to man, me vs you, that’s more mentality.”

Deeney never worked with Postecoglou, but it certainly would’ve been interesting to see how these two would’ve co-existed at Celtic.
