Sporting Director who Arsenal know well has just become available amid hunt to replace Edu Gaspar
Arsenal still need a new Sporting Director to replace Edu Gaspar – who left the Emirates Stadium in November.
Jason Ayto has been helping Mikel Arteta as an interim Sporting Director ever since the Brazilian’s sudden departure – but the Gunners are still looking to fill the position with a new face permanently.
Dan Ashworth is an option for Arsenal after surprisingly leaving Manchester United in December – just months after arriving from Newcastle – but there is currently no outright favourite for the vacancy.
Now – however – a man Arsenal know very well has just become available in Sven Mislintat.
Borussia Dortmund sack Sven Mislintat
The German worked at Arsenal as Sporting Director during the Unai Emery era – but left in February 2019 before ever getting the chance to collaborate with Arteta.
At the time, Sky Sports were told Mislintat had “some differences of opinion with Spanish sporting director (Raul) Sanllehi” and was also annoyed by a lack of “financial firepower” at Arsenal.

Lars Ricken, Geschäftsführer Sport des BVB, teilte Mislintat diesen Entschluss am Donnerstag persönlich mit.
Sanllehi has since departed, and Arsenal now seem to be stronger financially having splashed £105m and £65m on Declan Rice and Kai Havertz in recent years, so perhaps a return would be welcomed for Mislintat, who spent only ten months working as Technical Director at Borussia Dortmund.
The Athletic explain that the 52-year-old endured a strained relationship with Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl at the Signal Iduna Park.
Best Sven Mislintat signings as Arsenal continue search to replace Edu
Nobody can doubt that Mislintat – who also worked at Ajax after leaving Arsenal – has an eye for talent.

The man born in Kamen signed Robert Lewandowski for just £4m during his first stint at Borussia Dortmund under Jurgen Klopp – while also signing Ousmane Dembele from Rennes for £13m, who was later sold to Barcelona for £97m.
Mislintat’s track record at Arsenal was – admittedly – poor, bringing the likes of Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Stephan Lichtsteiner to north London – but a fresh start under Arteta within a new structure could yield different results.
