Southampton agree deal to sign Newcastle target as announcement expected within 24 hours

Southampton have now agreed a deal to sign a player who Newcastle wanted – as Russell Martin continues to strengthen his side.
The Saints have already secured deals for Adam Lallana, Charlie Taylor, Rento Takaoka and Taylor Harwood-Bellis after beating Leeds in the Championship Play-Off Final last season.
Now, Southampton are about to add a Newcastle target to that bunch – as well as another player…
Southampton agree deals to sign Ronnie Edwards and Nathan Wood
TBR Football have now been told that Southampton are signing Ronnie Edwards from Peterborough in a deal worth just £3m.
It comes after sources informed TBR Football last week that Newcastle and Everton were also hoping to sign the England U20 captain this summer.
TBR Football also understand that Nathan Wood is moving to Southampton from Swansea – also in a switch worth £3m – with both deals expected to be announced by the Saints within 24 hours.

Sources also state that Southampton will announce a new contract for Russell Martin before both signings are made public.
Middlesbrough – who sold Wood to Swansea in 2022 – are going to land themselves a cut of the £3m fee, although the exact percentage is currently unknown.
Saints could be getting themselves a bargain
The £3m deal for Edwards could prove to be a masterstroke by Southampton.
The claimed in September 2022 that Peterborough had rejected a £4m bid from Crystal Palace for the precocious central defender, while even believe Sir Alex Ferguson told Manchester United to sign the 21-year-old.

Furthermore, Chelsea are said to have monitored Edwards – according to Barry Fry, Director of Football at Peterborough, who shared the news with the .

Therefore, it can certainly be regarded as something of a coup for Southampton to sign the defender, especially for a sum of just £3m.
