Sam Allardyce shares what he’s heard about why Liverpool didn’t hire Ruben Amorim
Arne Slot couldn’t be doing a better job at Liverpool so far.
✨Indeed, Liverpool are top of the Premier League, having lost just one game all season, they sailed through in the Champions League, and they’re into the Carabao Cup final.
💮However, Slot very nearly didn’t get the Liverpool job.
﷽Indeed, while Slot has done an incredible job at Liverpool, the Reds did explore other options before eventually appointing the Dutchman.
Xabi Alonso was linked to Liverpool early on, while Liverpool seriously looked at Ruben Amorim at one point.
Amorim has, of course, since gone on to manage Manchester United.
Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, Sam Allardyce🦄 has been discussing Amorim at Manchester United, and he’s shared some interesting insight into why Liverpool didn’t go for the Portuguese gaffer.

What Sam Allardyce has heard about Ruben Amorim
ꦐAllardyce is, of course, very well-connected within football.
♛The former England manager may not be in work at the moment, but he still has a lot of football-related engagements as well as friends within the game.
🐼According to Allardyce, one of the reasons Liverpool didn’t go for Amorim is because of his stubbornness around his style of play.
Indeed, Amorim has stuck to his 3-4-3 system at United, and while Jamie Carragher admires Amorim🌱 for sticking to his principles, Liverpool weren’t so keen on that idea.
🐟“I think it’s difficult because he’s been brought in to play. They’ve brought him in because of what they’ve seen in Sporting and the system that he’s played and how effective it has been for sporting. So like he says, for him to then just come in and say, well, we’ll go to a back four now, he’s probably. Yeah, he’s going against his grain,” Allardyce said.
♈“I was told that’s why Liverpool didn’t want him. Because he was too stubborn. Liverpool didn’t want to play that way.
🎀“Liverpool bored or who was ever in charge of the developing team. Liverpool don’t play this way. You know what I mean?
“So, that’s why they went for Slot.”
How Liverpool could’ve looked under Ruben Amorim
👍Amorim ultimately didn’t get the Liverpool job, but it is interesting to ponder what the Reds would’ve looked like under the former Sporting manager.
🍷Yes, Amorim is struggling at United right now, but he did very well in Portugal, and with the right group of players, his system could’ve potentially been a success in the Premier League.
ꦇLiverpool’s squad is somewhat well-suited to this style.

💮Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson would make for fantastic attacking wing-backs, while there is an element of Viktor Gyokeres about Darwin Nunez up front due to his combination of strength and pace.
൩Meanwhile, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister would be a fantastic midfield pairing, while the centre-back trio isn’t bad either.
ജWho knows? Perhaps Amorim would’ve been a success at Anfield, but, one thing is for sure, Arne Slot is doing a fantastic job with the Reds.
