Report: Aston Villa now want to sign ‘extraordinary’ player, just months after Newcastle failed with bid
Aston Villa want Diego Carlos of Sevilla to bolster their𒈔 backline during the summer transfer window ahea𒅌d of the new season.
The claim that C🐼arlos is among the list of defenders Steven Gerrard is looking at as he looks to improve his options.
James Tar꧋kowski of Burnley is another who has been mentioned and he would be more cost-effective because he ♒is at the end of his Turf Moor contra𒐪ct.
Villa have already signed Boubacar Kamara and have done smart, quick, quiet business in recent windows, ❀even before Gerrard’s ar♔rival.
Villa want Diego Carlos
Their report reads: “Aston Villa are exploring the possibility of signing Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos in the summer transfer window.
“Villa manager Steven Gerrard is looking to strengthen his defensive options and Carlos is thought to be among those under consideration.
“Carlos attracted interest during the January market from sides including Newcastle United. He is recognised by Villa as being one of Europe’s leading operators in his position, although they might need to free up space in the squad through departures before adding to Gerrard’s resources.
“The potential asking price and salary for Carlos may also prove a complication, which is why Villa are sure to be looking at various opportunities. Gerrard has held internal talks about bolstering his rearguard for some time and James Tarkowski of relegated Burnley is another prominent candidate.“
Sevilla president Pepe Castro said in February 🔯of Newcastle’s interest: “The economic effort has not only been in the two reinf🗹orcements but also in keeping Diego Carlos, for whom they’ve made a dizzying offer.
“B💦ut Diego Carlos is an extraordinary professional, he’s the one who has played the most minutes and has not stopped playing with offers.
“Our defence is the best in La Liga, spoiling that would have been risky and there has♔ been an economic effort.”
If Newcastle do go back in again, Villa may need to find big money, but it was reported in March that Carlos has slipped down their pecking▨ order now, perhaps because ofꦦ the potential cost of the deal.
