Brandon Barker has completed a deadline-day loan move to Oxford United from Rangers until the end of the season as he looks to get some game time under his belt – and the winger has posted a cheeky title Tweet after his exit.
Barker, 24, joined Rangers in the summer of 2019 after impressive spells with Preston North End and Hibernian – but has only managed to play 26 times in all competitions over the course of the past 18 months.
He has scored three goals in that time and enjoyed a brief resurgence following 2020’s pre-season – but ultimately has failed to cope with the competition from the likes of Ryan Kent, Kemar Roofe, Ianis Hagi and Scott Arfield.
But Barker has made himself available – understanding game time was always going to be at a premium. He has since reacted on Twitter to his move, cheekily including the hashtag “55” as Rangers remain clear of Celtic.
TBR’s view – Does Barker have a future at Rangers?
The former Manchester City star is in the final 18 months of his contract at Rangers and ultimately has not been able to keep up with the constant progression and improving standards that Gerrard has brought to the club.
Although he has been a good squad player and useful when turned to, he is likely to end up in the same kind of category as Greg Docherty, Jamie Murphy and others – decent, but the Gers have better at their disposal.
