Postecoglou must be even more keen to sign £15m player after today, Tottenham considered January bid
Ange Postecoglou was said to be keen on bringing Wolves No.8 Joao Gomes to Tottenham in the January transfer window.
A story claimed that Spurs were even considering a bid for the Brazilian last month as the Australian attempted to bolster his midfield department – there was also interest in Kalvin Phillips.
Now – after today – Ange Postecoglou is surely even more keen to sign Joao Gomes for Tottenham…
Joao Gomes shines against Tottenham
Well, the South American – who Wolves signed from Flamengo for back in January 2023 – shone against Tottenham earlier today, on what may have been something of an audition ahead of the summer transfer window.
Gomes netted both goals as Wolves recorded a 2-1 win in north London, scoring one in each half to ensure Gary O’Neil’s side did the double over Tottenham.
The 23-year-old firstly showed fantastic aerial prowess to nod Wolves in front, after some questionable defending by Tottenham which was described as “bizarre” by Ashley Williams.

Gomes then displayed great athleticism to keep up with Pedro Neto on the counter attack and slot home what eventually turned out to be the winner, after Dejan Kulusevski had equalised.
Tottenham are surely impressed
Spurs seem likely to sign a new central midfielder this summer with Postecoglou seemingly unconvinced by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
The Denmark international is allegedly going to leave if the Australian is still in charge.
Therefore, a bid for Gomes would not surprise us, and Spurs were surely impressed by the Brazilian’s overall performance in addition to his match winning double.
WhoScored shows that the man from Rio de Janeiro made successful tackles against Tottenham – more than any other player on the pitch registered – along with five clearances.

It proves Gomes has an industrial side to his game as well as strong attacking qualities, which will surely make Tottenham sit up and take notice.
Be sure to keep an eye out for the South American’s name this summer, as Spurs will surely reignite their interest after his stunning performance in N17 today.
