Player Nottingham Forest could have signed for £12m over the summer has now become the best in Italy

Nottingham Forest have pulled off some excellent signings in recent transfer windows.

The Garibaldi have done well to bring talents such 😼as Callum Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga to the City Ground without breaking the bank, with the duo costing £3m and £15m respectively.

Furthermore, the signings of Murillo and Nikola Milenkovic have truly beefed up Nottingham Forest’s backline, helping the Reds sit tenth after just one defeat in seven Premier League outings so far this season.

However, there was an opportunity Nottingham Forest ignored during ♕the summer transfer window that now seems like a mistake.

Nuno Tavares shining after Nottingham Forest rejection

Nottingham Forest signed Nuno Tavares on loan from Arsenal for the 2023/24 campaign back in September 2023 – with the stating 🌺that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side had negotiated a £12m option to buy at th♐e end of the season.

However, the 24-year-old strugg♛led, and was on🌃ly afforded five Premier League starts.

Tavares was almost sent back to Arsenal in January too – ꦰshowing just how unwanted he was at the City Ground.

Now – however – the Portuguese defender i🅘s shining at Lazio after the Italian giants decided not to read too deeply into his struggles at Nottingham Forest.

As shown on , Tavares is currently the highest rated player i💫n Italy with an average score of 8.🅘03 – putting him ahead of stars such as Rafael Leao, Ademola Lookman, Christian Pulisic and Marcus Thuram.

The Lazio No.30 has earned his ꦑexcellent rating thanks to a stunning start to the season, which has seen him provide five assists in just five Serie A appearances so far from left-back.

T༺avares even trained with Lazio before ♔his Arsenal exit was announced – showing just how eager he was to get going.

Nottingham Forest made the right call on Tavares

While these numbers from FotMob do not make good reading for Nottingham Forest, we still believeཧ the Reds made the right call in ignoring their £12m option to buy.

£12m is no✨t a huge amount of money, but nor is it a small sum, and Nottingham Forest put it to better use.

For example, the Garibaldi splashed less than £12m to sign a new backup goalkeeper in Carlos Miguel for £4m and a new forward in Jota Silva for £5.9m – padding out the squad rather than taki🌳ng a gamble on Tavares.

In hindsight, it seems like a bad decision given his exꦫcellent start to life at Lazio, but nobody can begrudge Nottingham Forest for making the call they did.
