Newcastle getting closer to signing £42m defender who has already been compared to Sergio Ramos
Newcastle United are now out of the woods when it comes to their PSR scares this summer and will be looking to make a splash in the market.
Eddie Howe‘s side were forced to say goodbye to Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh over the weekend.
The two Newcastle youngsters were sacrificed by the club to help balance the books against the financial concerns.
But now the Magpies will feel the freedom to spend some money this summer on the back of a season which really tested Howe’s strength in depth.
Newcastle have already added Lloyd Kelly their squad on a free transfer and signed Lewis Hall permanently in this summer’s window.
It now seems as if the Magpies are pushing along in their pursuit of another defender as Howe looks to really bolster his options at the back.

Newcastle advancing in race to sign £42m centre-back
The Magpies have gone into the summer window with some issues in their backline with Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman both suffering from significant injuries.
Although Newcastle do not need to worry about playing a busy schedule after failing to qualify for any form of Europe, there will still be concerns over the quality of cover for Botman.
This has seen the Toon compile a list of potential signings this summer at centre-back with one player, in particular, of real interest to Newcastle.
According to , Newcastle are advancing in their pursuit to sign the AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw.
It has been suggested the Germany international would cost Newcastle in the region of £42m this summer.
However, he is a player who Milan are not keen to offload with journalist Ben Jacobs providing an overview of the 22-year-old’s situation.
“Newcastle are advancing on Malick Thiaw as well, the German defender who’s on their shortlist to potentially be a new centre-back,” he said.
“AC Milan don’t really want to sell, so that isn’t an easy deal to get over the line, and this is why Newcastle were looking to bring in some funds from these outgoings.”
Malick Thiaw already likened to Sergio Ramos
Having joined Milan from Schalke back in 2022, the German has already made 54 appearances for the Serie A side.
Three years remain on his deal so the Italian outfit remain in a strong position to to negotiate when it comes to Thiaw’s future.
And this is a player who has already received a lot of strong praise in the early stages of his career with the AC milan sharing comparisons to Sergio Ramos and Joel Matip.
But Thiaw is a versatile player who could offer Newcastle cover at centre-back, right-back and defensive midfield.
