Nemanja Matic aims brutal dig at Andre Onana after claiming Manchester United are ‘way better’ than Lyon
Nemanja Matic has just fired back a brutal dig at Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana after his big claim ahead of their clash with Lyon.
Manchester United take on Olympique Lyonnais in the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday with the first-leg in taking place in France.
Lyon head into the fixture performing much better domestically than United have done this term as they are fifth in Ligue 1, meanwhile, the Red Devils are 13th in the Premier League.
Ahead of the European clash, Onana made a claim about the tie, which Matic was less than impressed by and the former United man has issued his response.

Nemanja Matic claims Andre Onana is ‘one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history’
Nemanja Matic has just claimed that Andre Onana is ‘one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history’ in response to his claim that the Red Devils are ‘way better’ than Lyon.
Speaking after the Manchester Derby, Onana told : “If we are focused, stay compact and together and follow the gameplan we will be winning the game. Of course, it’s not going to be easy but I think we are way better than them.”
The former United midfielder was less than impressed to hear what the Cameroonian goalkeeper had to say about the tie, without the ability to back it up.
Matic said he would have taken such criticism from goalkeepers like Edwin van der Sar, Peter Schmeichel or David de Gea, however, he believes Onana, who Ruben Amorim is open to selling, cannot be making such a claim.
In response, the Lyon star said in his press conference: “To say that you need to have cover, Onana? I respect everyone but to say that you need to have an answer.
“If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history, you need to take care when you are talking.
“If Edwin van der Sar, Peter Schmeichel or David de Gea had said that, I would question myself, but if you’re statically one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United modern history, then he needs to show that before he talks. We will see.”
Andre Onana having a quietly impressive season for Man United
Despite Matic’s claims, Onana is actually having a quietly impressive season for United as he is joint-third in the race for the Premier League Golden Glove.
Goalkeeper | Clean sheets |
Matz Sels | 13 |
David Raya | 11 |
Dean Henderson | 9 |
Andre Onana | 9 |
Jordan Pickford | 9 |
The 29-year-old has kept nine clean sheets this season in 31 appearances which is not bad going for a player who has been so heavily criticised.
