‘Needs to do more’… Brendan Rodgers says 24-year-old Celtic player simply must improve

Brendan Rodgers has thrown down the gauntlet to Mikey Johnston after the Celtic winger got his first start of the season against Hibs last night.

The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland winger got the nod after his impressive substitute showing against St Johnstone and, overall, he did make an impact.

However, it wasn’t eno💧ugh. According to the Celtic manager, Johnston needs to improv𒐪e further if he is to get a regular starting place at Celtic this season.

Rodgers said [], “Mikey needs to do more, that is the reality. He has big talent and comes into the game but if you are going to start the ga𒀰me, we need more impact from him but that is something we can ho▨pefully see over the course of time.

“He’s not young. H🎀e is 24. At some time you need to grab the bull by the horns and be aggressive. It can be easier c✤oming off the bench, it doesn’t feel like pressure.

“You can come in and show your qualities. If any player wants to be starting here you have to have th☂at ෴personality to come in and play.

“But he’s been really good in training and earned the start. Hopefully, if he gets more starts he can show more of his qualꦰitiesꦰ.”

Let’s talk about Mikey Johnston and Celtic

This is now Johnston’s eighth season at Celtic as part of the first team and, as y🐓et🎶, has still failed to grasp a starting first-team spot.

With Daizen Maeda and Liel Abada now returned to training, Johnston is going to find game time even harder to come by unles♐s he heeds Rodgers’ ꦐwords.

The 24-year-old winger has worked under four different managers now at Celtic and whilst there is undoubted talent there, has he really got enough in his locker to make it at Paradise?

For Rodgers certainly, the jury is still out. For the Celtic fans, I think they ꦺhave ౠalready made up their minds.
