Mikel Arteta proved a disaster that happened at Arsenal last summer in both defeats to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup
Arsenal are now heading for a warm summer training camp in Dubai knowing that their only chances of winning silverware this season are confined to the Premier League or Champions League.
Domestically, Arsenalౠ are six points behind Liverpool who also have a game in hand – a gap that is surmountable, but only if you’re outperforming the team ahead.
🌞In terms of the Champions League, Arsenal are in a very good position, having automatically qualified for the next round when they’ll face either Feyenoord, Juventus, AC Milan or PSV Eindhoven.
Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
1 | 23 | 17 | 5 | 1 | 56 | 21 | 35 | 56 | |
2 | 24 | 14 | 8 | 2 | 49 | 22 | 27 | 50 |
But the question has to be asked – is Mikel Arteta’s✅ squad capable of going one step further this season?
൩And on the evidence of their second leg display against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup, the answer is no.
♈Arsenal looked uncharacteristically shaky at the back, and as with all of their losses this season, they ultimately failed to score.
Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino didn’t improve Arsenal
🔯Over the two legs of Arsenal’s semi-final against Newcastle, the tie actually served as something of microcosm for their unsuccessful transfer window last summer.
💧It was Edu Gaspar’s last at the club and it was something of a disaster with the benefit of hindsight.
In two crucial knockout games against Newcastle, Arteta didn’t start one of Riccardo Calafiori or Mikel Merino😼 in either game – a damning review of the summer window.

ওArsenal spent a considerable sum on both players, who were intended to improve the strength of depth available to Arteta, and that they have.
🍌Calafiori in particular looks like a very clever signing, a player who can contribute a lot over the years to come.
😼However, Arsenal failed to improve their starting eleven that didn’t win a trophy in the season prior, and on reflection that has been a huge mistake.
An elite striker or left winger didn’t arrive, despite 𒐪Arsenal recognising that they were missing something𒈔 after bowing out of the Champions League to Bayern Munich last term.
Alexander Isak or Nico Williams would have made the difference
It is obvious to conclude that Arsenal should have bought Alexander Isak♔ from Newcastle last summer, especially after he terrorised William Saliba at St James’ Park on Wednesday evening.
In fact, 🔜Eddie Howe told Newcastle to target Gabriel Magalahes and Saliba, something Isak did with ease.
🃏But in reality, Isak might not have been available – but plenty of other players were.
꧂Arsenal failed to strengthen their starting eleven last season and they are now paying the price, another year that could go by without a trophy.
ꦛAnd even if the Gunners spend big next summer to remedy the situation, it will put a lot of pressure on their new players to deliver immediately, a club in need of silverware.
