Michail Antonio issues verdict on Newcastle signing Chris Wood in January

Michael Antonio has told Callum Wilson on that he believes that Chris Wood will be a great signing for Newcastle United following his January switch.

Wood is still awaiting his first goal for the Magpies after joining Eddie Howe’s side for . Of course, the fee perplexed some with the New Zealander only scoring three Premier League goals this term.

In fact, plenty seemed to see the biggest benefit of such a deal as being the fact that Burnley would lose their most consistent goalscorer over the last few years.

Wood has now made a few appearances for Newcastle. And actually, he has helped the Magpies take 10 points from four games. Those results have moved the club out of the relegation zone.

Some may look at his wait for a goal as a sign that Newcastle may have made a mistake signing Wood. However, Antonio insisted that he has been impressed with what he has seen.

“I watched a bit of your game and even though Chris Wood isn’t scoring any goals I’ve seen what he’s done,” he told .

“He’s the big man, getting his flick ons and the work he’s doing off the ball is helping you lot massively. I can definitely see you two playing up-front together, it’s definitely a great signing for you lot.”

Wood could come into his own when Newcastle face West Ham this weekend

Wood has been bright so far. Gary Neville lauded his performance in the win over Aston Villa last weekend. And the goals will surely come at some stage.

Playing against West Ham may certainly help bring the best out of the 30-year-old. He will know that he will face a physical battle.

Only two teams have won more aerial duels this season than the Hammers, . One of those is Wood’s former side, Burnley.

His ability to battle with the likes of Craig Dawson and others should certainly have an impact on how influential the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin, Ryan Fraser and Joe Willock can be.

And if he helps Newcastle ultimately stay up, there will be absolutely no doubt regarding whether Wood has been a smart signing or not.
