Marcelo Bielsa says Tottenham have a very ‘special’ talent in their ranks
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur made his first start in over nine months on Tuesday night.
The Spurs ace got 86 minutes under his belt as Uruguay ran out 3-0 winners over Bolivia in 2026 World Cup qualifying.
Bentancur suffered a long-term knee injury in a game for Tottenham against Leicester more than nine months ago.
Over the past few weeks, the Spurs man has been eased back into action, making substitute appearances for club and country.
And on Tuesday night, Marcelo Bielsa picked Bentancur in his starting XI for the routine win over Bolivia.
Tottenham ace Rodrigo Bentancur is a ‘very special’ player
After the match, the Uruguay boss couldn’t sing the Tottenham star’s praises highly enough, as per .
“He is a player that it is difficult to find an area of the midfield that he is not in a position to assume,” Bielsa said of the Spurs midfielder.
“There are not many players who defend like a holding midfielder, who attack and defend like an interior, like a number 8, like a mixed midfielder, and that when they reach the rival area he has the resources, the qualities of an offensive midfielder.
“It is a very special case within football in general. A player who in himself meets the conditions for all places on the field. Today he stood out clearly.”

It’s great to hear such praise for a Tottenham star from one of the very best coaches in the game.
Bentancur had to embark on a long and tough road back to fitness, and his return to the starting XI is amazing news for fans of Tottenham and Uruguay alike.
With Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma set to head to the Africa Cup of Nations next year, Bentancur’s return to fitness is a huge boost.
It will be interesting to see if Ange Postecoglou gives Bentancur a start in Tottenham’s next Premier League game, which is a tricky clash against Aston Villa.
