Manchester United made late move for ‘superstar’ midfielder who Arsenal wanted to sign this summer

Arsenal have finally got their summer up and running with the addition of Riccardo Calafiori over the weekend.

ꦗThe Gunners have found themselves battling some of Europe’s top clubs this summer in the transfer market.

Mikel Arteta♍‘s side were one of the clubs to have shown an interest in one of the most in-demand midfielders following Euro 2024.

TBR Football understands🌌 that Manchester United and Chelsea were both informed of Xavi Simons’s decision to finalise a return to RB Leipzig after both made late enquiries.

Premier League clubs were keen on Xavi Simons this summer

👍Arsenal, Man City, Man United and Chelsea were amongst the clubs to show a strong interest in Simons after PSG made him available earlier this summer.

♋PSG always insisted it would only be a loan which is one reason the likes of Arsenal and City backed away, but both United and Chelsea maintained an interest and TBR can confirm they made checks last week.

🗹However, Simons’s camp made it clear he was heading to Germany – but not, as many thought, to Bayern Munich but instead back to Leipzig.

Arsenal and Manchester United set to miss out on ‘superstar’

💮Having spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig, the Dutchman seriously impressed with a return of eight goals and 13 assists in the league alone.

𒉰Naturally, Bayern Munich showed their interest having seen what he is capable of doing first hand.

𝓀However, Premier League clubs were also shown what Simons could offer during this summer’s European Championship.

𓂃Simons has been hailed as a ‘‘ and the England players were able to see just that after he opened the scoring with his stunning strike in the semi-final.
