Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott praises Southampton as he makes claim about them playing out from the back

On their second trip to St Mary’s Stadium this season, Liverpool once again found things tough against Southampton even if they were able to win.

After Southampton sacked Russell Martin, it was Simon Rusk who took charge against Liverpool, hoping to halt Arne Slot’s winning machine.

⛎🌜And whilst Southampton were ultimately unable to cause an upset, they came incredibly close to doing so.

On a different day, Jarrel Quansah may have seen red late on and Southampton could have forced the game to penalties, cancelling out goals by Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott.

Harvey Elliott impressed by Southampton after Russell Martin exit

On Liverpool’s end, Elliott was instrumental in their victoꦅry, a player who will be hoping for more chances under Slot after his injury return.

Slot made an odd comment about Elliott after the game, clai꧒ming he was ‘bore♉d’ against the Saints at times.

But the midfielder himself was very ไcomplimentary about Southampton, who were still aiming to play out from the back even without Martin around, something Elliott seemed to respect.

Speaking to , Elliott said: “I wouldn’t say I was surprised by it because if you look at the Pre🔯mier League, they caused problems for us as well.

“They are a side full of confidence and they are not scared to pla🔥y out from the back and take risks. Credit to them, they caused problems for us today.

“We had to make sure we stood strong and defended as well as we can as a team. And☂ despite conceding one goal, we did that r꧟eally well.”

Southampton eyeing Danny Rohl alternative to replace Russell Martin

Of course, it’s going to be very interestingꦛ to see if Southampton waiver from their admirable, if not naive way of constantly playing out from the bacౠk in the Premier League.

Many would imagine that the club’s next manager can make an immediate impact simply by i💧nforming his defenders that they can go long.

In terms of who may come in, Southampton have found a new candidate to replace Martin, someone who joins the likes of K🐻asper Hjulmand, Danny Rohl and Carlos Corberan on the club’s shortlist🌸.

It’s a tough job꧙, and whilst Southampton earned the respect of Elliott on Wednesday evening, they’ll be much more concerned about picking up Premier League points in the future weeks and months.
