Leeds United now close to making another signing while Ao Tanaka also jets in for medical

Leeds United have agreed a deal to sign Ao Tanaka from Fortuna Dusseldorf – and another player could swiftly follow the Japan international to Elland Road.

In case you missed it, Tanaka is flying to England for a medical with Leeds after a sum of £3.4m was agreed with Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Now, another player is close to reaching an agreement with Leeds

Leeds United close to Isaac Schmidt agreement

Mike McGrath of the Telegraph now states that Leeds are close to reaching an agreement with St Gallen for the signing of Isaac Schmidt.

The 24-year-old has a UEFA Conference League Play-Off clash against Trabzonspor tonight (Thursday 29th August) to think about besides his future, although the Swiss defender could be withdrawn from the squad if talks with Leeds progress even further.

McGrath writes on X (previously known as Twitter): “Leeds are in talks over a deal for Swiss full-back/wing-back Isaac Schmidt from St Gallen. Close to an agreement for 24-year-old, who has Europa Conference play-off tonight ahead of tomorrow’s deadline.”

The St Gallen No.33 is capable of playing on the left or right of the defence, typically in a wing-back role, scoring one goal while also providing two assists in eight appearances so far this season while mainly operating on the right.

McGrath does not mention any sort of fee for Schmidt, but having already entered the final 24 months of his contract, St Gallen are not in the strongest negotiating position.

Swiss defender plays like Leif Davis

For those Leeds fans who know little about Schmidt, a comparison to a better known player may help.

Interestingly, the man from Lausanne has been likened to Leeds academy graduate Leif Davis, who has shone in a wing-back role for Ipswich since leaving Elland Road in July 2022, impressively recording 35 assists in 92 appearances for the Tractor Boys.

It was Football Transfers who the comparison.

It should be noted that Schmidt may have to settle for a role on the left, despite playing primarily on the right so far this season, after Daniel Farke signed Jayden Bogle from Sheffield United to cover that area.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Leeds could soon make a double transfer announcement involving Tanaka and Schmidt.
