Jose Mourinho names the Chelsea match that was ‘the biggest scandal’ he’s ever seen due to the referee
Jose Mourinho has had his fair of run-ins with referees over the years.
Indeed, while Mourinho used to sweet talk referees before games, when things weren’t going his way, he’d often be vocal about his displeasure.
Mourinho was never scared to make his opinions known, and, throughout his career, he’s seen some dodgy calls.
Back in 2005, Chelsea were eliminated from the Champions League via a ghost goal from Luis Garcia, which was perhaps the most notable refereeing decision to ever go against Mourinho’s side.
However, speaking go the BBC, Mourinho has now named another Chelsea Champions League tie as the biggest scandal he’s ever seen.

Jose Mourinho names the biggest refereeing scandal he’s seen
Mourinho touched on the 2005 incident with Luis Garcia, but there was another game he was more keen to speak about.
Indeed, Mourinho says that Chelsea’s 2009 meeting with Barcelona in the Champions League, refereed by Tom Henning Ovrebo, was the worst scandal he’s ever seen.
“The ball didn’t cross the line, was not at that time goal line technology. So, anything can happen,” Mourinho said.
“But if you remember, and this was not with me. So I’m even more comfortable to speak, but the Chelsea, Barcelona game with Ovrebo is the biggest scandal that I’ve ever seen in in Champions League, but it happened. Who won that competition? Barcelona, not Chelsea.
“So all these things happen in a competition of high level like the Champions League is.”
What happened between Chelsea and Barcelona in 2009?
16 years have now passed since the infamous game between Chelsea and Barcelona in 2009, and some younger fans may not recall this game.
When Mourinho calls this the biggest scandal he’s ever seen, he’s not lying.
Chelsea had no fewer than four clear penalty shouts in this game, and not a single one was given.
To make matters even worse, Andres Iniesta scored a late winner that consigned Chelsea to elimination.
Ovrebo has since gone on to admit he made mistakes in this game.
“It was not my best day really. Some days you are not at the level you should be. I can’t be proud of that performance,” Ovrebo said, via .
“There were several errors and everyone will have their opinion of those plays.”
Mourinho wasn’t the Chelsea manager at this time – Guus Hiddink was in charge for this game, but we can’t even begin to imagine how Mourinho would’ve reacted if he was on the touchline.
Carlo Ancelotti would eventually take charge after Hiddink and Ancelotti earned huge praise at Chelsea.
Didier Drogba channelled his inner Mourinho with his infamous on-camera declaration that the game was a ‘disgrace’, and this is a match that lived in infamy ever since.
Barcelona would go on to win the Champions League that year, but, that final probably should’ve been a rematch between Chelsea and Manchester United.
