Jonathan Woodgate urged Edwards to sign ‘machine’ for Liverpool
Jonathan Woodgate has told that he told Liverpool transfer guru Michael Edwards to sign Theo Hernandez when he was playing for Atletico Madrid.
The former England centre-back was doing some scouting for Edwards shortly after his retirement from football.
His remit was to watch games in Spain and Portugal and report back to the man tasked with negotiating transfers for Liverpool.

Woodgate left his role watching games for the Reds when he was handed the chance to join the coaching staff at Middlesbrough in 2017.
It’s uncertain whether Edwards tried to sign Hernandez, who eventually left Atletico to sign for city rivals Real Madrid.
“I recommended a player who signed for Real Madrid. I absolutely adored him but Liverpool decided they didn’t want him. He’s done OK – he’s at AC Milan now. Theo Hernandez – bombs on for fun, and he’s a machine.”
TBR View – Hernandez could have proved useful for Liverpool
The left-back lifted a Champions League during his time at Real Madrid, playing three matches as Los Blancos defeated Liverpool in the final during the 2017/18 campaign.
He did only manage 23 games for Real Madrid in total but has now found his way in Serie A with AC Milan.
Hernandez has played 51 times for his current club, scoring eight goals and claiming as many assists.
As a left-back, Liverpool might have welcomed his arrival.

Andy Robertson has been a remarkable signing for the Reds but in reserve, Kostas Tsimikas is yet to prove himself.
Had Liverpool taken the plunge and signed Hernandez he could have competed with Robertson for the shirt for years to come.
Woodgate might feel that the 23-year-old is one that got away for Liverpool.
