Jamie Carragher says Man United are trying to do something he’s never seen before which is ‘impossible’
Jamie Carragher has suggested that he has now noticed Manchester United attempt something he has never seen before.
Manchester United were reminded of the work which lies ahead at the weekend. Erik ten Hag’s side saw their five-game winning run and seven match unbeaten run come to an end at the hands of Fulham.
Alex Iwobi scored a stoppage-time winner for the visitors at Old Trafford. But Fulham were more than good value for their victory.
Jamie Carragher baffled by Manchester United’s defending
It was a performance and result which highlighted how much ten Hag still has to do before he silences all of his doubters. And it seems that it was a display which left Jamie Carragher somewhat baffled, particularly as he analysed what they were trying to do defensively.
United have conceded 11 goals across their last seven games. That includes one clean sheet, while they have conceded at least two goals against Fulham, Wolves and Tottenham and Newport County.
And speaking on (26/2 from 18:30), Jamie Carragher suggested that he does not understand what their defensive shape is meant to be.
“They defend like a team I have never seen before. What I mean by that is that they like to press high with a deep block. It’s impossible. They are trying to do two things at the same time, you can only do one thing or the other. They are all pressing high or defending deep, they are trying to do both,” he said.
Erik ten Hag’s side still searching for their identity
It does not feel as though ten Hag knows what his best team is. Injuries have played their part, but there have also been some players who have been in and out of favour at various points.
No centre-back in the United squad has made more than 13 appearances this season. And big names in front of them such as Casemiro have been really poor.
United are still searching for their identity. And if they do not work out what they want to do, the journey back to the summit of the game is going to become even longer.
