Jamie Carragher responds to what Erik ten Hag said about his Manchester United criticism

Jamie Carragher has responded to Erik ten Hag after the Manchester United boss commented on the criticism the pundit had of the side’s defending.

The 2-1 defeat to Fulham at the weekend reminded everyone of just how much work lies ahead at Manchester United despite the optimism which has stemmed from the arrival of INEOS.

Jamie Carragher had some strong views about what he saw from Erik ten Hag‘s side in the defeat. In fact, Carragher claimed that he had never seen anything like how Manchester United defended, noting that they play a deep defensive line while also trying to press from the front.

He did admit that Carragher had a point. But he clearly felt that he had been a target. And speaking on , Carragher has now had his say on ten Hag’s response.

“All I would say is that we are still talking about it now and other people will talk about it, they might have a go at me or him. But people might think what was I talking about and look into it more and then go, oh yeah that is a massive problem. More eyes will be on this now,” he said.

No-win move from the Manchester United boss

It was a strange move from ten Hag to get involved. Firstly, most Manchester United fans will know that Carragher had a good point. They were way too open in the middle of the park. And clearly, after a home defeat to Fulham, something is not right.

Perhaps ten Hag is looking to take the heat off of his players. We have seen managers do some strange things in press conferences to put the pressure on themselves instead.

But the perfect response from ten Hag would have surely been to find a way to resolve the issues they have defensively, rather than speak about the – seemingly justified – criticism he has received in public.
