‘He’s been brilliant’: James Maddison so impressed with £17m Tottenham player this season

James Maddison says he’s been really impressed with the start Guglielmo Vicario has made at Tottenham Hotspur this season.

Maddison spoke to after putting in a Man of the Match display against Fulham last night.

The 26-year-old bagged Tottenham’s second goal of the game and helped them secure a 2-0 win over the Cottagers.

But it wasn’t all plain sailing for Spurs and Guglielmo Vicario was forced to make a couple of brilliant saves to deny Fulham.

The Italian shot-stopper made a superb stop to his left-hand side to deny Joao Palhinha’s headed effort early in the first half.

Vicario was then called into action later in the game as he kept Bobby Decordova-Reid’s effort out.

And Maddison has singled out Tottenham’s new number one for praise after last night’s win.

Maddison impressed by Vicario this season

Speaking to BBC Sport, Maddison lauded Vicario for making a couple of important stops against Fulham last night.

“To be fair I thought his save in the first half was better from the corner, from Palhinha’s header, that was top-drawer,” the Spurs star said.

“After that, he probably wasn’t really worked until the latter stages and the moment you talked about and it was a fantastic save again.

“He’s been brilliant since he came in, Vic. Hopefully, he can continue that form for us.”

Vicario arrived for a modest fee worth over the summer as he made the switch from Serie A outfit Empoli.

He’s adjusted to life in the Premier League with ease so far and has arguably been one of the best goalkeepers in the division this season.

The 27-year-old did make a couple of errors with the ball at his feet last night. But that is to be expected from time to time when being asked to play out from the back.

On the whole, Tottenham seem to have picked up a top goalkeeper for a respectable fee in the current market.
