‘I’d be really surprised’… Pundit would be shocked if Manchester United man’s still at Old Trafford next term

Robbie Mustoe has named the Manchester United man he would now be shocked to see still at Old Trafford next season following their loss to Fulham at the weekend.

Manchester United were given a reminder on Saturday that there is a lot of work ahead of them despite the optimism which has emerged from Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival.

Fulham won 2-1, with Alex Iwobi scoring the winner in stoppage-time. And you really could not argue with the result, with Marco Silva’s men playing so well.

Erik ten Hag remaining at Manchester United next season would be a surprise

Of course, Erik ten Hag has to deal with a lot of criticism during his time at the club. The Dutchman has struggled to take the side forward. And there have been a few occasions where, from the outside, it has appeared that he is not going to be the right man to take the club forward.

INEOS have reportedly actually been impressed by ten Hag. But speaking on podcast, Robbie Mustoe believes that it would be a real shock to him if the 54-year-old was still in charge when next season starts.

“And given what they’ve done in going for really good people from the CEO of Man City who was almost the head man, they got the head man, Dan Ashworth is going to go from Newcastle – really, really highly respected as a technical director – I think it makes absolute sense at the end of the season to thank Erik ten Hag, did the best that he could, but try and get somebody that is close to that respect of being a really top, top manager,” he said.

“I’d be really surprised if Erik ten Hag stays on given what they want.”

Dutchman will hope to show that he remains the right man

The problem the Manchester United hierarchy have is that the club have tried several different managers since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down.

They have threatened to move themselves back into the title picture. But the harsh truth is that they are not a lot closer to the summit than they were when David Moyes was at the helm a decade ago.

There may be some positive changes happening behind the scenes. But clearly, there is a lot of work to do on the pitch.

Ten Hag will argue that he can still be the right man to take them forward. But clearly, he has plenty of doubters to silence.
