How much money Celtic will receive after Leo Hjelde moves to Sunderland

The Celtic board have been receiving criticism this month for failing to secure enough transfer signings this month.

🎃Whether the recruitment department or the board are to blame for that I’ll let you decide but what cannot be denied is that when it comes to brokering deals for players leaving the club, the board are excellent at ensuring the club’s interest in that player doesn’t end when the cheque hits the bank account.

Sell-on fees are a huge part of football transfers now and the Celtic board𝓰 must get some credit for ensuring that every player sold has a clause inserted where the club are recompensed should the player move on again.

The Celtic fans saw it with Virgil van Dijk when the club received over £6m when he joined Liverpool [] and will likely see it again when the time comes for Kieran Tierney and Jeremie Frimpong to move on.

But this time it’s the turn of Leo Hjelde. The young Norwegian was highly rated at Celtic before he moved to Leeds United in 2021.

𒀰Luckily for Celtic, the board at the time had the foresight to see that he was a quality player and inserted a sell-on clause into the deal.

🧸James Marshment from TEAMTalk posted on social media channel when the story first broke, “With Leo Hjelde on his way to Sunderland, Leeds will net a fee of up to £1.5m, though Celtic are owed a 15% cut.

꧙“His exit dwindles Farke’s options further, though an arrival of our own, in Ben Godfrey, is reportedly gathering pace.”

🌞Should the fee Marshment has predicted be correct then Celtic stand to collect £225,000 before the end of the week. Not a bad return from a player that left the club almost three years ago.
