‘Good mentality’… Gareth Southgate says £75m Tottenham target is so composed on the ball’

Jarrad Branthwaite has been called-up to the England squad by Gareth Southgate for the first time with the Everton ace impressing this season – and Southgate praised the Tottenham transfer target.

After a year at PSV on loan last term, in which he scored four goals in 36 games, the 21-year-old is now first choice under Sean Dyche. He’s played 31 times, missing one of Everton’s last 26 league games.

A £75m target for both Tottenham and Arsenal ahead of the summer window, Gary Lineker responded to the news that he had been included in the England side to take on Belgium and Brazil in friendlies.

Speaking immediately after the news that Branthwaite had been included in the side for March’s games, Southgate shared what had impressed him about the Spurs target – praising his ability in possession.

“He’s good with the ball, good composure, good mentality. He’s left-footed, and we don’t have many left-footed defenders. He’s in on merit and we’re looking forward to working with him,” Southgate said.

Gareth Southgate praises Tottenham target Jarrad Branthwaite

It is well deserved, and perhaps the start of Southgate replacing Harry Maguire. The Manchester United man has always played on the left of central defence under Southgate – but Branthwaite could come in.

Similar to Maguire in terms of aerial ability and stature, he is also excellent on the ball and left-footed. He might not be the finished article yet, but he is a sensational talent – hence the interest from Spurs in him.

Arsenal, too. If Spurs or Arsenal can get a deal done for Branthwaite this summer, he would be a superb addition. The inclusion from Southgate is just the next step in what promises to be a successful career.
