Further proof Marcelo Bielsa was a genius at Leeds as Tyler Roberts makes surprise move
Leeds United enjoyed some of their best moments in recent times under Marcelo Bielsa prior to his sacking back in 2022.
Daniel Farke is making Leeds fans smile again with the football his side are playing at the moment in the Championship, with a number of summer signings already paying off.
The likes of Manor Solomon and Largie Ramazani both injected a new lease of life on the field against Hull City, and Mateo Joseph looks to be finding his feet up top.
Leeds currently find themselves in fourth position with a place in the Premier League very much the aim after missing out in the play-off final last season.
And, one man who knows a thing or two about getting Leeds to the top-flight is Marcelo Bielsa.
One player who played a pivotal part in the Yorkshire club’s rise under the Argentine boss was Tyler Roberts, who joined from West Brom back in 2018.
Where is Tyler Roberts now?
Interestingly, things haven’t gone to plan for Tyler Roberts since leaving Leeds United permanently in June 2023.
He spent last season at Birmingham City but just wasn’t able to enjoy a prolonged spell in the side, with just 784 minutes to his name all season.
Now, the former Wales international finds himself playing for a new club in the form of Northampton Town, who announced that he’s joined them on a season-long loan.
How was Tyler Roberts’ time at Leeds?
Tyler Roberts appeared 108 times for Leeds prior to his exit, scoring 10 goals and providing nine assists.
The 25-year-old was one of the first names on the teamsheet during the 2018-2019 season as Leeds finished third in the Championship during Bielsa’s first season in charge. He scored three goals and assisted six but the Whites were edged out in the play-offs.
Bielsa grew really impressed with the attacker and the compliments started to fly in.
Alongside his efforts for Leeds, Roberts was also getting recognition on the international stage for Wales.
During Leeds’ promotion-winning season Roberts found himself receiving praise from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink for his cameo against Hull City, but injuries held him back at times and halted his progress.
Regardless, the Whites had secured promotion to the Premier League and Marcelo Bielsa was getting all the plaudits, with Pep Guardiola even congratulating his good friend.
Bielsa continued to lean on Roberts in the Premier League, starting him in the majority of Leeds’ games during the second half of the season prior to his sacking. This led to even more praise but on the international stage this time as Tony Pulis said the former Leeds favourite had .
It was clear that Bielsa knew exactly how to get the best out of Roberts and what positions to use him in after introducing him to the number 10 position for large parts.
Bielsa did end up getting sacked in February of 2022 as Leeds crashed towards relegation, and many Leeds fans believe some of Roberts’ performances during that season in the Premier League didn’t help Bielsa’s cause, but the fact that he’d even developed that far under Bielsa was astounding.
Upon the expiration of that Premier League season, Roberts found himself being loaned out to Queens Park Rangers and he’s never been the same since, with him now at his third different club in the past few years.
