Fabrizio Romano shares just how close Newcastle are to signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace

Newcastle United are now playing into the final hours of this summer’s transfer window as Paul Mitchell looks to pull something special off.

Eddie Howe has had his patience tested on Tyneside this summer with the Newcastle board struggling to get deals over the line.

Regardless of the immense financial backing behind them, Newcastle’s standout signing of the summer so far has been Lloyd Kelly on a free.

Having battled the PSR scares back in June, it could certainly be argued that Newcastle have actually weakened their squad with the exits for Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh.

Even Alan Shearer has been left furious with the lack of transfer activity at Newcastle this summer.

But there is one potential saving grace for the Toon with Newcastle looking to pull off a late deal for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

How close Newcastle are to signing Marc Guehi

All Newcastle fans will be aware that Guehi was in action on Tuesday night for Palace in the Carabao Cup; he captained the Eagles in their win over Norwich City.

Newcastle have already made four bids for Guehi over recent weeks but have, so far, failed to find a breakthrough.

But Fabrizio Romano has now provided his understanding on just how close Newcastle fans are to seeing the England international wearing the famous black and white.

Speaking to , Romano has claimed Newcastle are ‘so close’ to landing Guehi over these final days in the market.

“They [Newcastle] are close, since end of July, so close, yes, but it’s not done yet, and the clubs are still talking, are still negotiating, but it’s still not a done deal,” he said.

“So the conversation is ongoing now, obviously, after having many bids rejected, Newcastle are very careful also in the communication of this story, because they’re spending a long time trying to sign the player.

“But the negotiations are still ongoing. They are still trying. Let’s see if they can pay what Crystal Palace want.”

Newcastle’s board have seriously underwhelmed this summer

Regardless of the PSR worries which the Magpies faced back in June, the Newcastle board have really failed to deliver this summer.

Even if they are able to land a move for Guehi over these final hours, not enough has been done to really strengthen the squad.

Landing Guehi would be an excellent move for Newcastle as they would be getting themselves a ‘fantastic‘ defender for the long-term future of the club.

However, at this stage in the window, they are likely to be giving in to Palace’s terms for the player.

Of course, Newcastle are limited to what extent they can flex their financial powers, but this window has shown a real lack of planning with the squad still having big holes needing to be filled.
