Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham’s plan to sign ‘unbelievable’ player for free in 2025 has failed

Tottenham Hotspur had a special plan to sign one of Ange Postecoglou’s key targets.

Spurs have gone fairly quiet on the market after starting the window brilliantly. They re-signed Timo Werner and then completed the signing of Archie Gray early in the window.

Tottenham fans have been desperate for new signings, and one player, in particular, has been linked with a move to Spurs for about a year now.

However, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham’s plan to land him is set to be unsuccessful as he is on his way to sign for another club.

Fabrizio Romano shares what Tottenham’s Conor Gallagher plan was

Conor Gallagher has been a wanted man for a while now.

It became very clear towards the end of the 2023/24 season that Chelsea wanted to sell the England international, who entered the final year of his contract in July.

Gallagher was described as Ange Postecoglou’s ‘dream’ signing at Tottenham, and it is no secret that Spurs have been interested in him.

However, the Chelsea midfielder, branded as ‘unbelievable‘ by Jermaine Defoe ( 05/05/24 at 2:55 pm), is now on his way to becoming a new Atletico Madrid player, which is a blow for Spurs, who had a plan in place to get him.

Romano has revealed that Tottenham actually wanted to sign Gallagher in the summer of 2025, when he would’ve been a free agent if he had run down his contract at Chelsea.

That would’ve been a shrewd bit of business by Spurs, but sticking to that plan and not sending an offer to Chelsea to sign him in this window has backfired.

Romano revealed in his : “Another big name on his way to Atletico Madrid is Conor Gallagher. The Chelsea midfielder said yes to the La Liga giants after a complicated saga that took some time – he’s now agreed to the contract terms and will fly for his medical.

“The verbal agreement is in place, but all still waiting to get all signed in order to feel finally safe on this saga, it’s almost ten days now.

“Chelsea will make a guaranteed €40m from the sale of Gallagher, so it’s a good sale for them, especially as they preferred to sell him abroad even though he also had interest from Premier League clubs.

“Tottenham wanted him for next summer as a free agent, but no formal bid was sent to Chelsea this summer.”

Tottenham need to step up their transfer plans

The new Premier League season begins in just nine days, but Tottenham still have a lot of work to do.

Spurs could do with reinforcements in centre-back, left-back and even attack. With Gallagher no longer an option, they may have to look at a new midfielder too.

The clock is ticking, and the longer Spurs go without making a move, the more difficult it will be to get deals over the line at the right price.

It will be interesting to see what Tottenham will do in the coming days.

If they want to give Postecoglou the best chance of taking his side to the next level, Daniel Levy and Johan Lange have to step up and get new players in ASAP.
