Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham were ready to make huge bid to sign ‘incredible’ player this month

Fabrizio Romano claims that Tottenham Hotspur were prepared to pay ‘big money’ to sign OGC Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo this month.

Romano has been discussing Jean-Clair Todibo’s future and admitted it will be ‘very difficult’ for the defender to leave Nice during the January transfer window.

Spurs were heavily linked with a move for the French defender ahead of the window, with reports even claiming that Todibo was convinced by Tottenham’s project.

But Spurs have since switched their focus to Genoa’s Radu Dragusin and remain locked in talks over a deal to sign the defender.

And it would appear that Spurs have moved for Dragusin simply down to the fact that Nice had no intention of selling Todibo this month.

Tottenham were ready to launch huge offer for Todibo

Speaking on , Romano was asked about the possibility of Man United snapping up Todibo in January.

The transfer insider admitted that it would be a ‘very difficult’ deal for United to pull off and claimed that Spurs were ready to launch a big money offer for the defender.

“I think for Todibo it’s going to be very complicated to see him leaving Nice in January because Tottenham wanted him and they were prepared to put big money on the table,” Romano said.

“Nice didn’t want to negotiate. Not even for 35 or 40 million euros. So, I think it’s going to be very difficult.”

Todibo did appear to be Tottenham’s preferred target ahead of the January window. The ‘’ centre-back has starred for Nice this term and is attracting interest from a host of top sides.

But it’s easy to understand why Nice aren’t in the mood to sell one of their key players in the middle of a season.

The French outfit remain in the hunt for the Ligue 1 title and sit just five points behind league leaders PSG.

Todibo would have been a brilliant option for Spurs due to his pace and aggressive style of defending, making him ideal competition for Romero.

But with Nice unwilling to even negotiate for the 23-year-old, Spurs have made the right decision to move on to other targets with haste.

Ange Postecoglou will certainly be hopeful the club are able to bring in a new centre-back sooner rather than later. With Cristian Romero and Ben Davies currently sidelined, the Aussie is short of options in central defence.
