David Thompson cannot understand why Liverpool did not try and sign Willian
David Thompson cannot understand why Liverpool did not consider a move to sign Willian on a free transfer, after Arsenal confirmed that they had agreed a deal to land the Brazilian – after his Chelsea contract expired.
Willian, who turned 32 last weekend, has agreed a three-year contract with Arsenal after Chelsea refused to extend the 69-time international’s deal beyond the summer of 2022. That is, despite starring in blue last season.
Clocking up 47 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea, the former Shakhtar Donetsk winger had a hand in 20 goals for Frank Lampard’s side last term – scoring 11 goals and creating nine more.
A set-piece specialist, of Willian’s 11 goals this season – one has scored from a free-kick and four from the penalty spot. Thompson reacted to Arsenal signing Willian, and asked why his former side Liverpool did not consider him.
Disappointed in Willian signing for Arsenal when you look at Chelsea’s ambition for next season surely had higher aspirations than Arsenal surprised didn’t have a bite for him a truly gifted Athlete even at 30 years old.Thpughts?

TBR’s view – Willian would have been good, but one issue
Wages. he is going to earn an astounding £220,000 a week at Arsenal over the next three years, despite the Gunners making 55 staff redundant. , that would make him Liverpool’s highest earner.
Yes he would have been an excellent signing as cover for Jurgen Klopp’s excellent front three, with the Brazilian likely to accept being first reserve given his age. But for £220,000 a week, he is not worth it.
