David Ornstein now shares why Arsenal chose not to rival Tottenham for Mathys Tel

Mathys Tel is expected to join Tottenham before the 11pm transfer deadline.

The France U21 international has been firmly in the spotlight across the past week after making൲ it clear he wanted to leave Bayern Munich – due to a lack of playing time under Vincent Kompany.

Tel initially rejected Tottenham – despite Spurs and Bayern Munich agreeing a £50✨m fee – which allowed Arsenal the chance to explore🌺 a deal.

TBR Football understand Tel’s camp encouraged Arsenal to make a move – but the Gunners decided against signing the Frenc🦂hman.

Now – thanks to David Ornstein – the specific reason behind why Arsenal chose not to sign Mathys Tel and allowed Tottenham to have a free run has emerged.

Mikel Arteta was unsure about Mathys Tel

Speaking for on Deadline Day Live, the respected journalist simply said: “Mikel 🐟Arteta didn’t just want to bring in a body.”

The Spaniard🌄 has made it explicitly clear throughout the winter transfer window that he only wanted to make a signing which improved Arsenal, saying: “We need someone that makes us better, and makes an impact on the team.”

Clearly, Arteta does not feel Tel represents an improvement on the likes of Gabriel Martinelli, Leandr🌳o Trossard, Raheem Sterling, Ethan Nwaneri or Kai Havertz – the only attackers available right now after Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus suffered serious injuries.

The 19-year-old has failed to score in 14 appearances across all competitions for Bayern Munich so far thꦕis season, so there is little evidence to prove Arteta wrong desꦉpite the fact the teenager is a precocious talent.

Arsenal could still sign Mathys Tel this summer anyway

Even if Tel becomes a hug🦂e success at To💟ttenham, Arsenal could still sign the Bayern Munich No.39 this summer regardless.

As things stand, the agreement between Bayern Munich and To🍨ttenham is simply a dry loan – meaning Spurs have no optio𝔍n or obligation to buy him at the end of the season.

Tottenham are pushing Bayern Munich to include an option – according to insider Paul O’Keefe – but it seems unlikely to be green 🦩lit at this moment in time.

Therefore, a bidding war could commence for Tel this summer, where Arsenal can take 🀅another look.
