Daniel Sturridge could barely believe what ‘mad’ £43m Tottenham player did vs Newcastle

Although it’s always a difficult fixture heading to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur will feel very aggrieved coming away from the game with a defeat.

Ange Postecoglou’s side dominated much of the game, even more so in the second half once the Tottenham🎉 manager made a significant adjustment to his side.

🃏Brennan Johnson had an obvious impact on the right, a bold move taking Pape Matar Sarr off.

✅Although, Spurs couldn’t channel their good play into goals, and it was the same tale away from home at Leicester City in the opening game of the season when Postecoglou was frustrated to draw.

♈That being said, in a game of fine margins, Spurs conceded a sloppy goal in the first half, even if it was ultimately an excellent finish by Harvey Barnes.

Daniel Sturridge alarmed by Cristian Romero’s role in Newcastle’s opening goal

Speaking during half-time coverage of the game, pundit Daniel Sturridge could barely believe Cristian Romero’sꦫ decision to chase the ball after clearing a defensive corner, even if he had some respect for his courage.

ꦑThe pressed Tino Livramento out of his box, and all the way to the sidelines.

༒And once Newcastle launched a quick attack, Romero was completely out of position and Barnes took his chance – right where the Argentinian presumably would have been.

💟Sturridge said: “He’s pressing like a mad man, which I actually respect it to be fair because the intention is good, trying to put pressure on the ball, he expects Livramento to play it back, [but] he’s got the ability to be able to manipulate it.

🌞“And from there as it develops, you see Harvey Barnes in the centre of the pitch, almost playing like a number 10, fantastic cross into the box and the finish man – got to give him respect for that fantastic finish first time.”

Micky van de Ven was sorely missed for Tottenham at St James’ Park

Whilst Radu Dragusin did enjoy some strong moments deputising for Micky van de Ven🧸, the latter was sorely missed against Newcastle.

꧒Alan Shearer recently called Van de Ven ‘tireless’ꦬ, and Spurs could have certainly benefited from his running and composure on Sunday afternoon.

൲Without the Dutchman available, Romero played as Postecoglou’s left-sided centre-back given the lack of natural cover available for Van de Ven.

🔥And perhaps as the season goes on, it will be seen as a mistake that Tottenham didn’t recruit specialised cover – a signing believed to be on Postecoglou’s wishlist.
