Aston Villa close to signing national team captain as summer spending spree continues

Aston Villa have already made eight new signings this summer – and a ninth is now seemingly on the way to Villa Park.

Unai Emery clearly felt that his side needed major reinforcements ahead of a return to the UEFA Champions League, and while the starting XI has been bolstered significantly through the arrival of stars like Amadou Onana, an apparent signing for the future is now being finalised.

So, who is close to joining Aston Villa? Let’s take a look…

Aston Villa close to signing Yeimar Mosquera

Pipe Sierra – one of the best journalists around when it comes to Colombian football – has now revealed that Aston Villa are close to signing Yeimar Mosquera from Orsomarso.

It is said that Aston Villa will buy the Colombia U20 captain outright, before loaning him for the 2024/25 campaign.

Interestingly, Sierra adds that Mosquera could even be sent to Real Union – the Spanish side owned by Emery and his family.

The central defender only joined Orsomarso in January 2024, but impressed hugely last season across 20 appearances, in which he scored two goals and was yellow carded just twice.

Smart business from Monchi

When the first-team is already in fine shape, it always makes sense to explore the market for gems who could become key players later down the line, and that is exactly what Monchi has done.

Aston Villa’s Director of Football clearly sees potential in Mosquera, and does not want to miss out – despite the fact Emery already has Pau Torres, Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings, Diego Carlos and Kortney Hause to call upon.

Aston Villa are believed to be willing to sell Carlos this summer, whereas Mings only has 23 months left on his contract at Villa Park.

Therefore, Aston Villa may soon be in a position to welcome Mosquera into the fold under Emery, so this deal makes plenty of sense – more sense than allowing someone else to swoop in and benefit from the South American prospect fulfilling his vast potential.
