Arsenal must seriously regret the day the lost out on signing £57m Man United player now

It’s not too often you associate the word ‘regret’ with Arsenal in the transfer market these days, especially when mentioning Manchester United.

The arrivals of Declan Rice and Kai Havertz last summer now look particularly clever, with the latter of those deals coming out of nowhere.

Mikel Arteta clearly has a vision for his squad, and it’ll be interesting to see how he aims to take it one step further in the summer, regardless of what is achieved this season.

And although Rasmus Hojlund’s move to Manchester is now looking like a win, it seems fair to say that United are struggling to find success in the transfer market more often than not.

Deals for Antony and Casemiro now look ill-advised, even if the latter was thriving when he initially arrived.

However, one deal United achieved in the summer of 2022, amid interest from Arsenal, still looks crucial to this day.

Lisandro Martinez was said to be a player that Mikel Arteta really wanted to add when he was at Ajax, , but United eventually signed the defender, perhaps to Arsenal’s regret.

Arsenal must regret the day Lisandro Martinez joined Manchester United

Although Martinez has been unfortunate with injuries this season, he has thrived in the Premier League since arriving, and it’s clear why Arteta was interested.

Martinez could have solved a number of positions for Arsenal.

Not only can the 26-year-old play in the centre, but he can also be deployed in defensive midfield or at left-back.

The Argentine has predominantly been used centrally for United, but he could have taken a different trajectory at Arsenal.

In truth, Martinez would have offered a lot of what Jurrien Timber was expected to provide this season, but just one year earlier.

Martinez definitely has the ability to begin the game as a left-back and then invert into midfield, dictating play.

And given Arsenal bid for Martinez just before Oleksandar Zinchenko arrived at the club, it’s believable that he was intended to play a similar role.

And despite how exceptional Zinchenko has been for Arsenal on the ball over the last season or so, he’s still often found out defensively – something rarely said of Martinez.

So although Martinez wasn’t ready-made to thrive in possession like the Ukrainian, he may have eventually found that level, presenting a more well-rounded option.

Therefore, Arsenal may still regret the day Man United pipped them to the signing, even if they perhaps weren’t willing to pay that fee.

All that being said, one player who wanted to join Arsenal was ‘devastated’ when a move didn’t materialise.
