Arsenal have made an enquiry to sign 23-goal striker who’s already decided to leave his club this summer

It’s become abundantly clear that Arsenal will attempt to sign a new striker to boost Mikel Arteta’s squad next season.

By all accounts, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are going nowhere, but Arsenal are still determined to add another goal-scorer, someone intended to start more often than not.

And whilst Mikel Arteta would love to sign Alexander Isak it’s becoming clearer by the week that the Swedish striker is likely to remain with Newcastle United.

Isak wanted to play Champions League football next season and Eddie Howe’s side should be able to offer that judging by their current form.

Of course, Arsenal are looking at several other strikers as a result, and one of the names on that list is that of Lille striker Jonathan David.

Arsenal make their move for Lille’s Jonathan David

At 25-years-old, David has scored 107 goals in 227 games for Lille, including 23 this season.

However, David’s time at Lille is now coming to an end and the striker is expected to leave the club on a free transfer when his contract expires in a few months’ time.

And according to Italian source , who were presumably exploring Inter Milan’s interest in the striker, Arsenal are one of two clubs at the front of the queue for David.

Arsenal are said to have ‘accelerated’ their pursuit of David and have made an enquiry to the player’s camp, alongside Bayern Munich.

The report states that neither club have made a contract offer at this stage, but Arsenal are said to be seriously interested.

As well as his scoring record for Lille, David has also netted 32 goals in 61 appearances for Canada, a striker who does seem primed to take the next step in his career.

Andrea Berta might be making a mistake

Of course, some Arsenal fans might have some doubts about David being the calibre of striker they’ve been waiting for.

The 25-year-old obviously has talent, his goalscoring record speaks for itself. However, it has to be questioned whether he would actually prove to be an upgrade on Havertz or Jesus.

If Arsenal signed Isak for example, they know they’re getting an immediate upgrade, and the same could probably be said for Viktor Gyokeres.

However, David has often been linked with bigger Premier League sides over the years without making a move, suggesting there is something missing for an elite club to come in.

In fact, Arsenal should be targeting Hugo Ekitike as their perfect Isak alternative if it comes down to it — a striker who arguably has a higher ceiling than David.

A difficult decision for Andrea Berta and his transfer team to make, but one that they need to get right.
