Ange Postecoglou admits that £50m Tottenham player seriously needs a rest after Man City defeat

Tottenham Hotspur certainly gave a much better account of themselves in the second half of their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Man City keeper Ederson produced one or two excellent saves to deny Tottenham, and the likes of Wilson Odobert and Pape Matar Sarr missed some golden chances.

But either way, there was certainly more to be positive about for Ange Postecoglou, who saw a reaction from his side.

Of course, Postecoglou actually took the chance to rest three players against City, a luxury he’s not been afforded over the past few months.

All of Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Djed Spence dropped to the bench, a trio in need of a break.

All three were missed, but Postecoglou seemingly made the right call when considering Spurs’ upcoming tie against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.

Ange Postecoglou thinks Mathys Tel needs a rest at Tottenham

That being said, after Wednesday evening’s game, Postecoglou admitted that he would now be very keen to hand a break to on-loan Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel.

Tel played 66 minutes as Spurs’ central striker before being replaced against City, a striker who has scored once in five games for his new club.

Tottenham can buy Tel for £50m in the summer, a move that Postecoglou appears keen to make.

And when speaking in his press conference after Spurs’ 1-0 defeat, Postecoglou admitted that Tel now needs a rest once Dominic Solanke is ready to play.

He said: “Mathys has worked hard and he was one who probably needs a rest. It will be good to get Dom back in there. When he was playing for us, he was hard to stop.

“You could see the benefit of them having [Erling] Haaland back and it hopefully won’t be long now.”

Dominic Solanke is closing in on his injury return

Fortunately for Tottenham fans, Postecoglou is expecting Solanke back very soon along with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

Spurs’ players are all returning at the right time and the club’s chance to rest the likes of Tel in the near future will hopefully prevent a similar level of injuries mounting up again.

That being said, Pep Guardiola commented on Tottenham’s squad depth after overcoming City’s bogey side in north London.

Guardiola clearly respects what Spurs are able to do under Postecoglou, even if they are still languishing in 13th place.

However, Tottenham’s second half performance did bode well for their chances of shooting up the table, efforts which will be helped by the return of Solanke.
