Ange Postcoglou admits he almost subbed off £42m Tottenham player at half-time vs Man City

Tottenham Hotspur boosted their hopes of winning a trophy this season with a spirited showing at home as they secured a 2-1 win against Manchester City in the Round of 16 of the Carabao Cup.

Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr got their names on the scoresheet for Ange Posteclglou’s side, while Matheus Nunes scored what turned out to be a consolation for the away side.

Tottenham’s injury issues soured what was otherwise a perfect cup outing for the hosts as a handful of key players were withdrawn prematurely.

And Postecoglou has delivered an update on Cristian Romero’s condition after he was substituted in the opening exchanges of the second half against Manchester City.

The Argentine defender has been a key player for the club in recent years and started at the heart of the backline alongside Radu Dragusin, with Archie Gray and Micky van de Ven occupying the flanks.

Van de Ven was substituted in the first half after he was seen clutching his hamstring, while Romero followed suit after the interval.

Postecoglou said after the game that Romero was ok to carry on but he didn’t want to risk it, after already losing Van de Ven.

“He [Romero] was feeling something at half-time, he was a bit tight,” said the Tottenham boss.

“I was going to take him off at half-time but he was insisting on starting. But after the game started my gut was telling me that after losing Micky we can’t afford to lose Cuti as well.”

Judging by his comments, Romero’s substitution was merely a precaution, allaying fears of a long-term injury.

Romero’s stats for Tottenham this season

Romero has been an ever-present in the Premier League this season and is undoubtedly one of their most important players.

He has become a key player for club and country since his move from Atalanta and has also captained the club on a few occasions this season.

Postecoglou feels Romero has endured a mixed season for Tottenham so far and did the right thing by bringing him off against Man City as he simply can’t afford to lose a player of his stature for the long haul.
