Alan Shearer seriously disappointed with £30m Chelsea player against Liverpool

It was another disappointing cup final for Chelsea at Wembley on Sunday evening and Alan Shearer highlighted the wastefulness of Chelsea winger Noni Madueke after he came off the bench.

Mauricio Pochettino was trying to end his wait to win silverware in England and against a Liverpool team plagued by injuries, his side had a brilliant opportunity.

However, for BBC Sport, Shearer was disappointed with the forward and ultimately Liverpool made them pay.

Shearer criticises wasteful Chelsea winger Madueke

Chelsea had a fantastic chance to end their five-game losing streak in domestic cup finals.

After Ryan Gravenberch was stretched off following a challenge from Moises Caicedo, Jurgen Klopp had to turn to a very inexperienced bench to make changes.

However, Mauricio Pochettino’s forwards made poor decisions time and again in front of goal and gave Caoimhin Kelleher some tough saves to make when in reality he should never have been given a chance.

Noni Madueke was brought on for Conor Gallagher in extra time but failed to impress Alan Shearer as he failed to find his Chelsea teammates at key moments.

He left Christopher Nkunku fuming for failing to cross at one point and then his decision-making left a lot to be desired.

There are going to be plenty of question marks over many of Chelsea’s players after Sunday evening’s performance and Madueke is unlikely to escape that scrutiny.

Chelsea fail to capitalise on key chances vs Liverpool

During extra-time, Madueke was looking for Nkunku and just as he checked his run, he played the pass, giving the ball away.

Shearer: “What a waste! I mean he’s had two or three really good opportunities [Noni] Madueke and he’s wasted all of three of them.

“He did exactly what Liverpool wanted him to do then which was misplace the pass and not run at anyone when he got past two or three players.”

Pochettino wasn’t happy with what he was watching on the sidelines, with one player in particular feeling his wrath.

Madueke has plenty of potential, but as Shearer has pointed out, if he’s going to be a success at Chelsea he needs to improve his decision-making in the final third.

It was only a few months ago that his manager told him he needed to up his game.

The Carabao Cup Final was the perfect opportunity to prove that he could play a key part for Chelsea and unfortunately, he didn’t take that chance.
