Tottenham Hotspur’s primary defensive target last summer was Villarreal star Pau Torres, and it looks like the Spaniard is on Spurs’ wish list again.
The 25-year-old has been one of the best defenders in Spain for a couple of years now. He has been brilliant for the Yellow Submarine and under ex-Arsenal boss Unai Emery, he has taken his game to a whole new level.
Torres was one of Villarreal’s most important players when they won the Europa League last season. His performances were so good that multiple top clubs from Europe were keen to sign him, including Tottenham.
claimed that Spurs, then under Nuno Espirito Santo, were ready to make Torres their second most expensive signing ever, but he turned them down.
Pau Torres publicly claimed he rejected Tottenham
Back in November last year, Torres sat down for an interview with the . He was asked about Tottenham’s offer to sign him and the Spaniard claimed he rejected them because he wanted to play in the Champions League with Villarreal.
He said: “The pull of playing the Champions League with the team from my town was bigger (than joining Tottenham). I was clear from the start.
“This is only the fourth time Villarreal reached the Champions League, which shows how hard it is and it was a dream to play the competition with my lifelong club.
“The president didn’t put pressure on me, even though they could make a lot of money. He always said ‘the decision’s yours’, that he’d respect it. I appreciate that.”

Conte wants to sign him for Spurs now
reveal this week that Tottenham are still interested to sign Torres. Antonio Conte is keen to bring in another centre-half this summer and the Villarreal man is reportedly one of the options.
Spurs are set to face competition from Manchester United this summer for the talented 25-year-old defender, who was as ‘absolutely brilliant’ and someone who’d be perfect alongside Cristian Romero.
The report claims that Villarreal, who are in the semi-final of the Champions League, are prepared to let Torres go this summer and are looking for a fee in the region of £50 million.
It definitely won’t be easy for Tottenham to sign Torres, but if Conte can convince him to make the move, he could turn out to be an absolutely incredible player for them.
