‘A bit shocked’: Journalist now shares what he’s been hearing about Tottenham’s Vicario in Italy

Kelly mentioned that Vicario had a very good reputation in Italy and none of the big clubs expected Tottenham to move so quickly.

: “I spoke last night to Daniele Fisichella the Italian football journalist about him and the chances of him replacing the apparently irreplaceable Donnarumma in the Italian team.

“He says his cap is coming soon.

“But, he was on the radar of the big Italian clubs during the summer and they were all a bit shocked when Spurs swooped in and got him.

“They were hesitating because two of them had goalkeepers that they thought were very good and it would just upset the apple cart to bring in an even better one.

“The rest of them thought that he would be commanding a transfer fee and wages that Italian clubs at the moment just can’t [afford].

“Spurs have definitely benefited from that because in his mind, in one way he was the most important player in Italy the last two years because he kept our team up in the form of Empoli.”

Kelly says Vicario was on the radar of top Italian clubs before he joined Tottenham

Although Vicario has had a stellar beginning to life at Spurs, one pundit still thought the jury was out.

Despite recognising his strong start, Mark Schwarzer revealed that he still has his doubts over Vicario in the long-term.

Schwarzer couldn’t quite pin his opinion on one aspect of the keeper’s game, but said he’s yet to be fully convinced.

Of course, that is an opinion that many Tottenham fans will deem as harsh.

Vicario has stood big for Ange Postecoglou’s side in their last few wins and seems to have shaken off some lacklustre moments when he first joined.

And as Kelly points out, Tottenham do have a keeper in Vicario that was sought by some of Italy’s biggest clubs.

Moreover, at 27-years-old, the keeper still has a ton of room for growth, much like this whole Spurs squad.

And although Alan Shearer isn’t tipping Tottenham for a surprise Premier League title, these Spurs players may think otherwise.
